God’s Supremacy

The trials we are currently going through demand a living faith and a real trust in God, which means that we need to know who He is and what He is like. So, for the next two weeks, we are going to look at the attributes of God, to help us to see God rightly, and be able to trust in His character.

Pause:

Before you start reading this devotional, take a moment to stop what you’re doing, slow down and focus on Jesus.

Pray and ask him to open your eyes to see as you read the scriptures, and to open your ears to hear as you wait on the leading of the Spirit.

Read:

1 Chronicles 29v11-12: “Yours, Lord, is the greatness and the power and the glory and the splendor and the majesty, for everything in the heavens and on earth belongs to you. Yours, Lord, is the kingdom, and you are exalted as head over all. 12 Riches and honor come from you, and you are the ruler of everything. Power and might are in your hand, and it is in your hand to make great and to give strength to all.”

Colossians 1v15-20:
“He is the image of the invisible God,
the firstborn over all creation.
16 For everything was created by him,
in heaven and on earth,
the visible and the invisible,
whether thrones or dominions
or rulers or authorities—
all things have been created through him and for him.
17 He is before all things,
and by him all things hold together.
18 He is also the head of the body, the church;
he is the beginning,
the firstborn from the dead,
so that he might come to have
first place in everything.
19 For God was pleased to have
all his fullness dwell in him,
20 and through him to reconcile
everything to himself,
whether things on earth or things in heaven,
by making peace
through his blood, shed on the cross.”

Going Deeper:

After “The Last Dance” premiered on Netflix recently, fans waited each week for the latest episodes to drop, to watch Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls at their peak in the 90’s. And, this series added fuel to the fire of the debate between fans of Jordan and Lebron James (if there even really is a debate?!?!), about who is the GOAT? Who is the Greatest Of All Time?

Some of you might also know of the Skateshop and Streetwear brand called “Supreme”. They started out in April 1994, with a small Skateshop in New York, and today are a global clothing / lifestyle / accessory brand that is now worth over $1 Billion.

Now, we throw out titles like “GOAT” or “Supreme” easily. But, in Christian Theology there is a word that only describes God: That He is Supreme. He is the GOAT.

Supreme means “Highest in rank or authority” or “the most important or most powerful.” “The Greatest.” Or, “The Ultimate.”

That is God alone.

If you were to think of a woman or man that you think of as powerful, who would that be? Or, if you were to think of the most influential person alive today, who would that be? Or, if you were to think of the greatest leaders or the most important or most admired people alive in our world today, who would they be?

In the scriptures, one of the titles given to God is ‘the King of Kings and the Lord of Lords’. It’s as if there was a nation of Kings only, and the person chosen as their King – the only one great enough, powerful enough, respected enough and able to rule all of these other Kinds – was God. He is on a level all on His own.

He is the most Important, most Influential, most Powerful, most Beautiful, most Glorious being in existence. Nothing and no one even comes close to being compared to Him.

And not only did God create everything that exists, and not only does He sustain everything that exists by His power. But God also rules over everything. And everything that exists, exists for Him!

God is at the center of everything, and everything revolves around Him, and is about Him. Even you and I.

Our lives are not about us. But instead, we are characters in His great story, given the chance to play a supporting role to Him.

And this all-powerful God, who needs nothing, and owns everything, and can do anything, loves you and wants a relationship with you.

He cares about you. He knows you. He sees you, and hears your prayers.

And that God, who rules and reigns over everything and calls the shots, says to you and I, that He is “working all things together for the good of those who love Him and are called according to His purpose.” (Romans 8v28)

So do not fear. Do not worry. Do not be anxious, because even in the midst of the unprecedented realities that we are facing, the God who loves you and who gave Himself on the Cross for you, is also the King of all things.

And He is Supreme.

Pray:

Respond to God in prayer by speaking to Him about what stood out to you from this passage this morning.

Listen:

What is the Holy Spirit saying to you this morning?

Apply:

What are you going to do in response to what God is saying to you from the text and by the Spirit?
